On Quilts

Some of you know I love and appreciate quilts as an art form akin to sculpture and painting.

Below is a gallery of American quilts in recent photographs taken along the cardinal directions of Lake Tahoe, and its output, the Truckee River.

They are hand pieced, prior to 1955, with the exception of one; showcasing the United States in warm tones (machine pieced, 2000s).

I Failed to display these last summer, in a local Quilt Show & BEE. i hope to get the chance in 2026.

For more of my writing on quilts…

Thanks for visiting.

Happy to Announce:

Took a day job to help manage Reno’s beloved plant shop - Sierra Water. The elevated warehouse boutique is known for its wonderful atmosphere of plants, art and flowers - with a community of creatives behind the scenes, who find joy in providing exceptional service.

Working among bio-diverse plants & fresh flowers, on such a terrific team, is proving to be a profoundly positive and creative decision.

Below, a few shots - for the socials.

Thanks for visiting.

HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE:

Exciting chapter Spring/Summer of 2024. Managed operations for the launch of Butter & Salt’s latest venture - Perren Grocery at RanchHarrah. It’s a speed train of a business, so I stepped off at the conclusion of first quarter and its successful opening.

The charmed space - for coffee, fresh pastry and elevated grocery goods is expanding in Reno, as resident cafe at the Nevada Museum of Art and new locations in Tennessee.

New Work: 4D - AUGMENTED REAITY

Finally playing again with “cosmic tumblers” in augmented reality!

My thanks to the UNR staff and students at the DeLaMare Library for their assistance scanning some of the 3D sculptures and prototypes for the MindSET project.

Up until now this project had largely been a K-12 curriculum for teaching STEAM in innovative ways - using the Fibonacci sequence / Golden Ratio. Now, the larger scope of the project is growing too.

The sequence/ratio itself is the point of departure for the bulk of my current work. I’m looking forward to “anchoring” pieces soon; dropping them in AR, in specific locations for viewing in real-time and space.

2019

NEW WORK: PHOTOGRAPHY

Four Florentine Self Portraits in Front of Four Camera Obscura, Italy, 2019. This collage was created as I walked for miles in Florence, locating over 60 paintings representing the same subject - The Annunciation; a fascination of mine, as I aim to demonstrate that many of the depictions are visual metaphors, or even allegory, for a phenomena produced via a camera obscura (projected, moving images). I also spent my time there re-enacting experiments with simple mirrors, much the same way many of the great Renaissance masters applied optics for the renderings of their own work.

While in the fall we ventured for 46 days across the country, camping, seeing family, and (of course) collectively learning along the way - over spring the kids continued to “un-pack” their new knowledge and apply it to their studies and projects. Good times.
